Happily married and very much in love but sex hurt. I waited until I was married for sex partly for religious reasons and fear of pregnancy. I was nervous about losing my virginity and when the time came it really hurt. Luckily he didn't manage long. I put this down to experience. Then we tried again and it really hurt again. Petting was fine. I had a smear test, that really really hurt too but they said nothing. I felt that my problems were physical. I used the dilators and after about a month I am really enjoying sex and this is a HUGE relief. I found putting them into warm water helped so they felt warm, warming by hand is not enough. A 50 yr old lady well known to me came to see me and after a little preamble about knee pain burst into tears. It transpired that her 22 year daughter had told her that she was worried that she would lose her partner because although she wanted to have vaginal intercourse "her body wouldn't let her". At the age of 25 I was diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosus,* a condition which thins the skin around the vagina making sexual penetration painful.

* Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder of unknown origin that can affect men, women, or children, but is most common in women, affecting either the vulva or the anus. More severe cases of lichen sclerosus produce scarring that may cause the opening of the vagina to narrow.
